Pay‐As‐You‐Go Clean Cookstoves for East Africa

Finalize research, testing and design of a fan-powered, forced-draft stove (FDS) that burns either wood or compressed agricultural waste cleaner, faster, and at a ~30% lower cost per meal than common charcoal stoves in East Africa. Optimize the FDS, design the power controller, and pilot the FDS in Kenya. Burn Manufacturing Co. will pilot the distribution of the FDS stove with M-Kopa, BBOXX, Fenix International and/or other companies that are quickly moving to the pay-as-you-go model for photovoltaic home power systems. The FDS fan will be powered by utilizing the existing capacity of the photovoltaic and lithium-ion battery system. The FDS stove will be sold wholesale to pay-as-you-go providers for approximately US$50. These providers will manage sales, distribution, and financing for the end user. The end user will have no up-front investment and will make payments of ~$0.20 per day over a 12 month period. Given that daily fuel expenditures will be reduced from $1.15 to 0.80 per day per day the stove is expected to effectively increase household income from day one.
